Egypt strengthens energy security with major Western Desert gas field

Egypt identifies extensive Western Desert gas field, boosting domestic production and securing regional energy supply

Egypt, in partnership with U.S.-based Apache Corporation, has discovered a major natural gas field in its Western Desert. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the field is expected to produce approximately 26 million cubic feet of gas and 2,700 barrels of condensate per day, marking a significant addition to the country’s domestic energy output.

Located within a recently granted concession near Apache’s existing operations, the site will leverage current infrastructure, reducing development costs and enhancing economic viability.

The discovery followed the drilling of the SKAL-1X exploratory well in the South Kalabsha region, which has become a focus of Egypt’s exploration initiatives in recent years.

Moreover, officials highlighted that the find reflects the success of Egypt’s policies designed to incentivize exploration and expand domestic production.

Consequently, Apache Corporation has increased capital expenditure and broadened its exploration activities in areas adjacent to its existing concessions, signaling growing investor confidence in the country’s energy sector.

In addition, this discovery aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to strengthen energy independence and reduce reliance on imports.

Business Insider Africa reported that Over the past year, the country has launched several key projects, including a Mediterranean drilling campaign scheduled for 2026, and has pursued agreements to enhance energy cooperation with Qatar and Germany. These measures are part of Egypt’s long-term plan to establish itself as a stable and reliable energy hub in the region.

Furthermore, Egypt has signed landmark regional energy deals, such as the $35 billion agreement with Israel for gas from the Leviathan field offshore in the Mediterranean, which will deliver about 130 billion cubic meters through 2040.This strategic partnership, combined with domestic discoveries, is expected to bolster Egypt’s role in regional energy markets, attract further investment, and support economic growth.

Energy analysts note that discoveries like the Western Desert field are crucial as global gas markets face volatility due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. By boosting domestic production, Egypt is better positioned to manage supply fluctuations, stabilize prices, and meet growing internal and export demands.

The new Western Desert field not only enhances Egypt’s domestic gas production but also reinforces its position as a regional energy trading hub, reflecting the country’s commitment to sustainable growth and energy security.
