The elections in Congo-Brazzaville were held on March 15, 2026. Denis Sassou Nguesso won with 94.82% of the vote, securing his fifth term in office.

President Kagame also sent a message expressing support for the candidacy of Rwandan national Louise Mushikiwabo, who is seeking re-election as Secretary-General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF).

In January 2026, Rwanda announced that it would present Louise Mushikiwabo as its candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the OIF, where she is seeking a third term. She has led the organization since 2019.

Rwanda has already begun efforts to rally support from other countries for Mushikiwabo’s candidacy in the upcoming elections.

Beyond these issues, Biruta and Sassou Nguesso also discussed bilateral relations and explored ways to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Rwanda and Congo maintain strong diplomatic and political ties. In August 2016, Rwanda opened its embassy in Congo-Brazzaville.

In 2011, Rwanda and Congo-Brazzaville signed agreements on trade and cooperation in areas such as air transport, tourism development, energy, security, justice, environment, and fisheries.

In November 2021, the two countries signed additional agreements covering military cooperation, collaboration in higher education and research, land management, sustainable development, environmental protection, promotion of bilateral trade, and expansion of cooperation in air transport.
