Rwanda and the Central African Republic maintain strong bilateral relations in various sectors, particularly in security, mining, and others.

In terms of security, since 2014, Rwandan soldiers and police have been deployed under the UN peacekeeping mission known as MINUSCA.

Since 2020, at the request of the Central African Republic, Rwanda has deployed 1,200 special forces troops to help repel rebels loyal to François Bozizé, who had advanced toward the capital, Bangui.

From 2023 to 2025, the Rwanda Defence Force trained over 2,400 soldiers to strengthen the capacity of the national army.

Rwandan troops and police in CAR are tasked with protecting civilians and their property, senior government officials including President Touadéra, UN personnel and assets, as well as key infrastructure such as M’Poko International Airport.

Their responsibilities also include restoring peace and security, ensuring full protection of Bangui and its surroundings, and maintaining conditions that allow normal civilian life to continue.

They are also tasked with securing President Touadéra’s residence located in Damara, in the Ombella-M’Poko Prefecture.
