President Kagame arrives in Congo for Sassou Nguesso’s inauguration

On the afternoon of April 15, 2026, President Kagame arrived in Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo, where he is set to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Denis Sassou Nguesso following his re-election

Congo’s presidential election was held on March 15, with Sassou Nguesso securing 94.65% of the vote. He defeated Mavoungou Zinga Mabio, who received 1.48%, along with five other candidates. The victory grants him another five-year term in office.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for April 16 at Unity Stadium in Brazzaville and is expected to be attended by several African heads of state.

Upon arrival at Maya-Maya International Airport, President Kagame was received by Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso.

Rwanda’s Minister of Internal Security, Vincent Biruta, had earlier arrived in Brazzaville on April 14, where he was welcomed by Foreign Affairs Minister Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso.

On April 15, Minister Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso said his discussions with Dr. Biruta focused on strengthening bilateral relations based on cooperation. Key areas discussed included the development of the Maloukou industrial and commercial zone, mining projects, and regional security issues affecting both countries.

During his previous visit to Congo in April 2022, President Kagame emphasized the importance of African unity in addressing the continent’s challenges, stating:

“We know Africa’s problems and we know the solutions. What is missing is working together and turning words into action with urgency.”

Rwanda and the Republic of the Congo maintain longstanding relations built on cooperation in trade, security, agriculture, land use, and the facilitation of air transport.
