This was revealed by a U.S. official who told Reuters that they had seen an email from the Department of Defense indicating that the U.S. could take action against countries that declined to support it in the conflict with Iran.
The message also indicated that the U.S. has begun reviewing how the United Kingdom administers the Falkland Islands located in the South Atlantic Ocean.
According to the email, the U.S. is frustrated with countries that denied it permission to use military bases on their territory to launch strikes against Iran.
When asked whether one member state can expel another from NATO, an official from NATO said it is not possible.
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO member states for not providing assistance in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Since the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026, Washington had expected support from European allies, given their longstanding partnerships.
The U.S. had also requested assistance from the United Kingdom, including access to its military bases, but this request was not granted.
On the other hand, Spain denied the U.S. permission to use its military bases in Rota and Morón to carry out strikes against Iran.
