President Kagame’s visit follows a trip to Rwanda by Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, in late March 2026, which focused on enhancing cooperation.
Upon his arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, President Kagame was welcomed by Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo and other officials.
Kagame is expected to hold talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan aimed at reinforcing cooperation and partnership between the two nations.
Rwanda has consistently described its relationship with Tanzania as strong and longstanding, while expressing appreciation for Tanzania’s role in facilitating Rwanda’s use of the Port of Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean. Around 70% of Rwanda’s imports pass through the port.
Citizens from both countries have also established two friendship organizations — RWATAFA (Rwanda-Tanzania Friendship Association) and TARAFA (Tanzania-Rwanda Friendship Association) — to promote closer ties between the peoples of the two nations.
Rwanda and Tanzania have signed numerous cooperation agreements across sectors including trade, agriculture, security, technology, transport, and industrial development.
In July 2025, Rwanda and Tanzania signed an agreement allowing the Tanzania Ports Authority to establish offices in Kigali, a move expected to accelerate trade activities between the two countries.
As members of the East African Community, Rwanda and Tanzania are also collaborating on regional infrastructure projects, including the construction of a railway linking the city of Isaka in Tanzania to Kigali to facilitate cargo transportation.
