Ukraine’s Prime Minister said the attacks damaged apartment buildings, houses, a children’s hospital and a school.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the shortage of air defence interceptors supplied by Ukraine’s Western partners had contributed to the loss of lives.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Ukraine urgently needs more weapons and called on its international partners to increase their military support.
Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Goncharenko told the BBC that the country had virtually no protection against missile attacks because of a shortage of interceptors.
Zelensky said that as long as Ukraine does not receive sufficient air defence weapons, “Russia will never seriously consider lasting peace.”
Ukraine’s military said none of the missiles launched during the attack was intercepted. Russia, meanwhile, said it had used land-, air- and sea-based weapons to strike military facilities and weapons depots.
Ukraine said Russia launched 168 drones and 44 missiles during the attack. Ukrainian air defences reportedly shot down 146 drones and 39 missiles.
The strikes also caused power outages in several buildings across Kyiv.
In Russia, the Defence Ministry said 726 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted after being launched toward different parts of the country.
Romania and Poland also reported taking defensive measures after the attacks moved close to their airspace, highlighting growing concerns over the potential spillover of the war beyond Ukraine’s borders.
