Hegseth Unveils “Arsenal of Freedom” as Trump Pushes Massive US Defense Spending

US Defense Secretary Hegseth launches “Arsenal of Freedom” to modernize Pentagon, while Trump boosts spending.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has introduced the “Arsenal of Freedom,” a major initiative aimed at modernizing the Pentagon’s weapons procurement, cutting bureaucratic red tape, and accelerating innovation within the United States’ defense sector. Speaking at events across the country, Hegseth emphasized a “commercial-first” approach, encouraging collaboration with private companies and defense contractors to streamline the acquisition of advanced military technology.

The initiative comes alongside President Donald Trump’s push for a substantial increase in U.S. defense spending. The Trump administration is proposing a Pentagon budget rise to $1.5 trillion, up from around $1 trillion in recent years, signaling an ambitious effort to expand U.S. military capabilities. Central to this strategy is Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system, a multi-layered network designed to protect the entire United States in a manner similar to Israel’s Iron Dome.

Hegseth’s plan also seeks to reform the U.S. defense-industrial base, enabling faster weapons production and fostering innovation in areas such as rockets, artificial intelligence, space technology, and naval systems. Officials argue that the initiative is not only about improving military readiness but also creating lucrative opportunities for U.S. companies involved in defense contracting.

While the effort to modernize the Pentagon has been widely welcomed as necessary, experts caution that the scale of proposed spending and ambitious projects like the “Golden Dome” could cost trillions of dollars and may not guarantee complete effectiveness. Analysts also note the challenge of creating a fair, transparent system for awarding defense contracts, as previous reforms evolved to reduce corruption and ensure accountability.

“This is a moment of mounting urgency,” Hegseth said in a recent address, drawing historical parallels to World War II and Cold War eras. He stressed that the U.S. must innovate and act decisively to maintain national security amid emerging global threats.

As the Trump administration moves forward with these plans, the “Arsenal of Freedom” represents a key pillar in its strategy to strengthen U.S. defense capabilities, drive technological advancement, and ensure rapid response to modern security challenges.
