PARIS, France has banned U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner from meeting top French government officials after he failed to attend a scheduled meeting at the French Foreign Ministry. The meeting was called to discuss comments from the Trump administration regarding the death of a French far-right activist.

This decision marks a serious step in rising tensions between France and the United States, highlighting disagreements over diplomacy, political statements, and respect for France’s domestic matters.

Why Kushner Was Summoned

French officials asked Ambassador Kushner to explain statements that blamed left-wing activists for the death of 23-year-old Quentin Deranque during protests in Lyon.

Instead of attending, Kushner sent a deputy from the embassy, which France rejected. Officials said this was a breach of standard diplomatic behavior.

Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said that, until Kushner meets French leaders personally, he will not be allowed to meet ministers, The Incident Behind the Disputers, or other top officials.

Not an Expulsion, But a Clear Message

France emphasized that Kushner can continue his work at the embassy and meet lower-level officials. This measure is temporary, aimed at enforcing diplomatic protocol rather than ending relations. Paris wants Kushner to engage directly with French leaders and address concerns in person before access is fully restored.

The Incident Behind the Dispute

The conflict began after Quentin Deranque, a far-right activist, died following violent clashes with left-wing protesters. The U.S. Embassy’s public statements, which highlighted left-wing responsibility, angered French officials. They said it was inappropriate for a foreign government to influence France’s internal politics.

Minister Barrot described the comments as a “political misuse” of Deranque’s death and emphasized that France will not tolerate interference in domestic affairs.

A Pattern of Tensions

This is not Kushner’s first diplomatic misstep in France. In 2025, he failed to attend a summons over letters criticizing France’s anti-antisemitism policies, sending a deputy instead.

French critics argue that repeated absences and public interventions have weakened trust between Paris and Washington, making cooperation more difficult.

Next Steps and Reactions

The U.S. Embassy has not made a public comment. However, French officials said full access to government ministers can resume once Kushner meets them personally.

Analysts warn that if the issue is not resolved, it could strain U.S.-France relations, affecting cooperation on foreign policy, trade, and security.
