Egypt is reinforcing its commitment to cooperation with Nile Basin countries, with a focus on South Sudan, following high-level talks in Cairo between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and South Sudanese Foreign Minister Mandy Semaya Kumba.
Abdelatty emphasized that collaboration must adhere to international law, highlighting principles such as prior notification, consultation, avoidance of harm, and the rejection of unilateral measures affecting shared water resources.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the ongoing consultative process to restore inclusiveness among all member states, as reported by Ahram Online.
The Egyptian minister stressed the importance of coordinated efforts with South Sudan to ensure the sustainability of the Nile, protect its environment, and maximize its resources for shared development. Discussions also covered strengthening bilateral relations, advancing cooperation frameworks, and improving consultation mechanisms between Cairo and Juba.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for security and stability in South Sudan, reflecting the close ties and shared interests of the two nations.
This meeting follows recent engagements between the Head of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service Hassan Rashad and a South Sudanese delegation led by the President’s Security Advisor Tut Galwak, which emphasized peaceful resolution of regional crises and collaboration on Nile water issues.
