In a remarkable example of international solidarity, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) has successfully completed a humanitarian engineering mission in Jamaica, demonstrating how even a small nation can make a powerful global impact.
Since January 2026, a contingent of Rwandan military engineers has been working thousands of kilometers away from home, helping communities recover from the destruction caused by a powerful hurricane Melissa that damaged homes, roads, and essential infrastructure across the island which were worthy over $8.8 billion.
A Mission of Solidarity
The Rwandan team made up of around 100 military engineers, was deployed to assist with reconstruction efforts and support local authorities in rebuilding affected communities. Despite the distance between the two nations, Rwanda responded quickly to Jamaica’s request for assistance.
Over two months of the course of the mission, RDF engineers worked alongside the Jamaica Defence Force, focusing on rebuilding damaged homes, restoring infrastructure, and supporting community projects aimed at helping families return to normal life.
For many Jamaicans, the presence of the Rwandan engineers became a symbol of international friendship and cooperation because Rwanda restored hope that was lost when the hurricane happened.
One resident from a rebuilt community expressed gratitude to the visiting engineers:
“When the hurricane destroyed our homes, many of us felt forgotten. Seeing soldiers come all the way from Africa to help us rebuild gave us hope again. We will never forget Rwanda.”
Another citizen added:
“They worked hard every day, side by side with our people. They were not just soldiers, they became our friends.”
These efforts helped many families return safely to their homes and restart their daily activities.
Senior officials from both countries praised the success of the mission and the dedication shown by the Rwandan troops.
According to Vice Admiral Antonette Wemyss‑Gorman, Chief of Defence Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force:
“The support from the Rwanda Defence Force has been extraordinary. Their engineers worked with professionalism, discipline, and compassion. This mission has strengthened the bond between our two countries and has made a real difference for many Jamaican families.”
RDF Engineer Contingent Commander, Col Moses Kayigamba highlighted Rwanda’s commitment to global cooperation.
“Rwanda believes that solidarity does not stop at borders. Even though Jamaica is far from our continent, we share the same humanity. Our engineers came here not only to rebuild houses, but to rebuild hope.”
A Small Country with a Global Impact
Although Rwanda is geographically small, its commitment to international cooperation continues to grow. The successful mission in Jamaica shows how countries can work together across oceans to support communities in times of crisis.
From peacekeeping missions in Africa to humanitarian engineering work in the Caribbean, the Rwanda Defence Force continues to demonstrate that solidarity, professionalism, and compassion can travel far beyond borders.
As the mission concludes, the partnership between Rwanda and Jamaica stands as a powerful reminder: when nations work together, even the greatest distances cannot stop the spirit of helping others.
