Aleksandar Vučić resigns as Serbia’s President to seek Prime Minister’s post

Aleksandar Vučić resigned as President of Serbia on Sunday, September 27, 2026, in order to seek the position of Prime Minister in parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25.

Vučić will represent the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). He had previously announced that he would step down as president to enable him to compete for the leadership of the government if his party wins the election.

His second presidential term was due to end in May 2027, but Serbia’s Constitution does not allow him to seek a third term as president.

Before resigning, Vučić addressed his supporters who had gathered outside his office in the capital, Belgrade. He said he was proud of what had been achieved during his time leading the country.

The parliamentary elections were brought forward following months of pressure from student-led protesters in Serbia. The protests began after a railway station disaster in the city of Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people.

The protesters initially called for a transparent investigation into the accident before later demanding early parliamentary elections. Vučić subsequently announced that the elections would be held on October 25, 2026.

Ana Brnabić, who was serving as Speaker of Parliament, will temporarily lead Serbia until a new president is elected. The presidential election to replace Vučić must be held within 90 days.

In the parliamentary elections, Vučić’s party and its allies will face opposition groups, including student-led movements campaigning against corruption and a coalition of parties advocating for closer ties between Serbia and the European Union.
