Rwanda is advancing efforts to position its coffee sector among recognised global brands through a new partnership with English Premier League club Aston Villa, a move expected to increase international awareness of Rwanda Coffee and create fresh opportunities for exporters, farmers and businesses involved in the coffee value chain.
The partnership names Rwanda Coffee as Aston Villa’s official coffee partner, with the product set to be served at Villa Park, the club’s home stadium. In addition, the agreement places the Visit Rwanda brand on the front of shirts worn by Aston Villa’s men’s, women’s and academy teams, giving Rwanda a powerful platform to connect with audiences across different parts of the world.
Through this collaboration, Rwanda aims to showcase the quality of its coffee while highlighting Africa’s growing contribution to the global specialty coffee industry. The partnership is expected to strengthen consumer awareness, encourage new market connections, and promote Rwanda as a country capable of producing premium agricultural products.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB), Maëva Haguma, said the agreement provides an opportunity for Rwanda Coffee to reach a wider international audience through Aston Villa’s global fan base.
She explained that supporters visiting Villa Park will have the chance to experience Rwandan coffee, creating a direct connection between consumers and the country’s products. Furthermore, she noted that such exposure could encourage more people to seek out Rwanda Coffee and create new opportunities for exporters.
The partnership is also expected to complement Rwanda’s broader efforts to promote its tourism, investment and export sectors by linking the country’s brand with a globally recognised sports institution.
Meanwhile, Oreste Baragahorana, Chairperson of the Coffee Exporters and Processors Association of Rwanda (CEPAR), said international visibility is a crucial factor in building successful coffee brands.
He explained that success in the global coffee market depends on quality, reputation, recognition and consumer confidence. He added that strategic partnerships that increase Rwanda’s visibility help more consumers appreciate the value of Rwandan coffee.
Baragahorana added that stronger global recognition could encourage exporters to increase production and prepare for rising demand. As more consumers become familiar with Rwanda Coffee, he said, the country’s coffee sector can benefit from expanded market opportunities.
Beyond increasing awareness, industry stakeholders believe the partnership could contribute to strengthening Rwanda’s position among African coffee-producing countries. They say improved branding and international promotion can help attract more buyers, support producers and increase the value generated from coffee exports.
Rwanda has continued to invest in improving coffee quality, expanding international markets and promoting specialty coffee as one of its important export products. With the added visibility from the Aston Villa partnership, stakeholders expect Rwanda Coffee to gain stronger recognition among consumers and businesses worldwide.
The collaboration represents a significant opportunity for Rwanda’s coffee industry to build a stronger global identity while contributing to Africa’s growing influence in the international specialty coffee market.
