Kanye West has been told he is “not welcome” to perform in the southern French city of Marseille, after the city’s mayor publicly rejected his planned June concert.

The American rapper, also known as Ye, had announced a show at the Orange Vélodrome stadium on June 11. It would be his only scheduled performance in France this year. However, the plan has sparked strong criticism because of his past anti-Semitic and racist comments.

Mayor Speaks Out

Benoît Payan said the rapper would not be welcome in Marseille. In a message posted online, the mayor said he refuses to let the city become a stage for “hatred and Nazism.”

Marseille is known for its diverse population and strong history of different cultures living together. The mayor stressed that the city stands for respect and unity.

Why the Backlash?

West, a 24-time Grammy Award winner, has faced major criticism in recent years for controversial statements about Jewish people. Some of his remarks led to the loss of business deals and partnerships.

One of his songs also caused outrage after it appeared to reference Nazi themes linked to World War II. The issue remains sensitive in Europe.

Although the rapper later apologized and spoke about his mental health struggles, many critics say his past comments cannot be ignored.

Can the Concert Be Stopped

Even though the mayor has spoken strongly against the show, French law makes it difficult to ban a concert. Authorities can only stop an event if there is a serious risk of breaking the law or causing public disorder.

The event organizers say they have added clear rules in the contract to make sure no illegal statements are made during the performance.

What Happens Next?

For now, it is unclear whether the concert will go ahead. The situation has sparked debate in France about freedom of speech, public safety, and whether controversial artists should be allowed to perform.

As the planned date approaches, Marseille finds itself at the center of a growing national discussion.
