Renewed pledge underscores focus on child welfare and participation
Cornwall Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), pledging to strengthen efforts to protect and promote children’s rights across the county.
Children’s rights will remain central to local decision-making, with policies guided by the principle of acting in the best interests of the child, the council said. In this role, the council ensures that areas such as education, health, social care, and community services continue to align with the UNCRC framework.
Cornwall Council, founded to oversee local governance, public services, and community development in the region, plays a key role in education, social care, housing, and health, ensuring that decisions benefit residents, particularly children and young people.
Leaders emphasized the importance of listening to children and young people, noting plans to expand opportunities for them to have a voice in decisions that affect their lives. The renewed commitment also highlights a focus on protecting vulnerable children, including those in care and young people facing disadvantage.
The council added that it will work with schools, partners, and community groups to raise awareness of children’s rights and ensure they are embedded in everyday practice.
Officials said the pledge reflects a practical, long-term responsibility to improve outcomes and reduce inequalities for children.
