The 41-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, having helped the clubs and national team he represented achieve numerous successes throughout his long career.
In an extensive interview with Vogue, Ronaldo spoke about his future, particularly his plans beyond football. His current contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr is set to expire in 2027.
Asked when he plans to retire from professional football, Ronaldo said: “Definitely, this will be my last year in football. I want to leave an incredible legacy.”
At the end of 2025, Ronaldo had said he expected to have one or two years left in his playing career. At the time, he also indicated that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament.
Ronaldo now says he has already made plans for life after football, with his family expected to be one of his main priorities. He recently became engaged to his longtime partner, Georgina Rodríguez.
“My future is already planned. I have many things that I will be involved in, and it would be difficult to tell you just one. Football leaves a huge void, so there are many things you have to do to fill it. You get involved in many things; you don’t stay in one place,” he said.
“There will be enjoyment, lots of travelling, watching and playing the padel that I love so much, and continuing to enjoy what I have achieved. Twenty-five years is a long time to dedicate yourself to something.”
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner and one of the most decorated players in football history, began his professional career at Sporting CP in Portugal before playing for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al Nassr and the Portugal national team.
The most prolific period of his club career came at Real Madrid, where he spent nine years and scored 450 goals in 438 appearances.
Across his official senior career, Ronaldo has scored 976 goals in 1,330 matches, further cementing his place among the greatest goalscorers in football history.
