On the night of Wednesday, July 1, 2026, DR Congo was knocked out of the tournament after losing to England in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup being held in the United States.
It was a heartbreaking defeat for the Congolese side. DR Congo had taken the lead in the first half, but after the 75th minute England mounted a comeback, scoring the goals that ended DR Congo’s historic World Cup campaign.
After the match, Desabre attended the post-match press conference to discuss his team’s performance. However, before questions could begin, a journalist from DR Congo unexpectedly offered his condolences.
“We would like to inform you that our coach has lost his father. We wish you strength during this difficult time.”
Visibly shocked by the news, Desabre immediately stood up and left the press conference, which was brought to an abrupt end.
The 49-year-old French coach made history by guiding DR Congo back to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1974. Under his leadership, the Leopards also reached the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.
Desabre has been in charge of DR Congo since 2022. Before taking over the Congolese national team, he coached several clubs and national teams across Africa, including Uganda national football team, Ismaily SC, Espérance Sportive de Tunis, ASEC Mimosas, Wydad AC, and Pyramids FC.
