Everton Dealt Major Blow as Jack Grealish Suffers Stress Fracture

Everton have been dealt a significant setback after manager David Moyes confirmed that winger Jack Grealish has suffered a stress fracture in his foot, an injury that could sideline one of the club’s most influential players for an extended period.

The 30-year-old, who joined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City last summer, has been a key figure at Goodison Park this season. Grealish has made 22 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing six assists, while playing a central role in Everton’s attacking play.

“It’s a big blow because he’s been hugely important to us since the start of the season,” Moyes said. “It’s not for me to give the timescales – we’ve not got it from the doctors yet.”

Grealish played the full 90 minutes in Everton’s 1-0 Premier League victory over his former club Aston Villa on Sunday, making the news of his injury even more frustrating for both player and club. Everton, currently 10th in the Premier League table, are set to host Leeds United on Monday, with Moyes now forced to consider alternatives in Grealish’s absence.

The Everton boss also revealed that the club is in close contact with Manchester City regarding Grealish’s situation, particularly as he undergoes his recovery. However, Moyes played down any immediate discussion about making the move permanent in the summer.

“We’re not thinking about it at the moment,” he said. “We’re only thinking about Jack. We’re upset and disappointed for him that he’s got an injury.”

Grealish’s impressive form at Everton had sparked talk of a potential recall to the England squad, as well as a push for a place in the World Cup this summer. His most recent international appearance came under caretaker manager Lee Carsley in October 2024, and this injury now casts doubt over his chances of returning to the national setup in the near future.

After joining Manchester City from Aston Villa for a then British-record £100m in 2021, Grealish enjoyed major success, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup. However, his role at the Etihad Stadium diminished last season, where he managed just seven league starts and was left out of City’s Club World Cup squad.

Everton have been widely praised for revitalising Grealish’s career, with former midfielder Leon Osman describing the loan move as “a perfect match.”

“He’s completely bought into Everton as a club,” Osman told BBC Sport. “He’s been playing with a smile on his face again and makes Evertonians smile. He’s been outstanding, and his attitude has been great.”

Despite the strong desire from both club and player to continue the relationship, financial considerations remain a major factor. Everton are unlikely to meet the £50m fee previously discussed for a permanent transfer, while Grealish’s age, wages and now injury status will all play a role in any future decision.

For now, Everton’s focus remains firmly on Grealish’s recovery, as they prepare to navigate the coming weeks without one of their standout performers in what has otherwise been a promising season under David Moyes.
