Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis has been sacked as manager of Flamengo just hours after the club secured an emphatic 8-0 victory over Madureira to reach the Campeonato Carioca final.

Luis, 40, had overseen a remarkable run since taking charge in September 2024, replacing former Brazil coach Tite. In 100 matches at the helm, he delivered seven trophies, averaging a title every 14 games.

Trophy-Laden Spell Ends Abruptly

During his tenure, Flamengo lifted the Copa Libertadores in 2025, making Luis only the ninth individual to win the competition both as a player and as a coach. He had previously won it twice as a player with Flamengo in 2019 and 2022.

He also guided the club to Serie A, Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, Campeonato Carioca, Fifa Challenger Cup, and Fifa Derby of the Americas titles.

Despite Monday night’s dominant 8-0 Second-leg win, sealing an 11-0 aggregate triumph, Flamengo announced his dismissal shortly before 01:00 local time. Assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares also departed.

Mixed 2026 Campaign

The decision follows consecutive final defeats earlier this year in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa Sudamericana. Flamengo currently sits 11th in the league table after three matches, trailing leaders Palmeiras by six points, albeit with a game in hand, as reported by BBC News.

Luis, who won the Premier League under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea in 2015 and made 333 appearances for Atletico Madrid, leaves ahead of Sunday’s Carioca final against Fluminense.

His dismissal marks a surprising end to a highly successful, yet ultimately short-lived, managerial chapter in Rio de Janeiro.
