Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is on a rare diplomatic visit to Ukraine, where he called on President Volodymyr Zelensky to release two Ghanaian prisoners of war currently held after being captured while fighting for Russia.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Ablakwa emphasized the humanitarian dimension of the request. “We are optimistic that this visit will be successful, and that President Zelensky, acting with compassion, will release these two Ghanaians to us on humanitarian grounds,” he said.
The minister described the detainees as “victims of manipulation, disinformation, and criminal trafficking networks” that lured African citizens to fight in the conflict sparked by Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He commended Ukraine for upholding international law in their treatment, noting, “We have received reports that they are in good health. They have not been tortured or subjected to inhumane treatment since capture.”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga confirmed that both sides had engaged in “frank discussions” regarding the prisoners’ return. He also urged Ghana to strengthen measures to prevent African citizens from being recruited by Russia. “The Russians are dragging Ghanaians to their deaths, while Ukraine offers cooperation for the sake of life,” Sybiga said.
Ukraine has identified over 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries, including Ghana, among Russia’s ranks. This development highlights the continued international ramifications of the conflict and the growing need for diplomatic engagement to protect African nationals abroad.
