Ben Harburg’s bold acquisition of Al‑Kholood marks a new chapter in the Saudi Pro League’s global rise.
In a landmark development for Saudi football, American investor Ben Harburg has become the first foreign owner of a top‑flight club in the Saudi Pro League, taking full control of Al‑Kholood FC, a modest side based in Ar Rass, Saudi Arabia.
The acquisition, completed in July 2025 by Harburg’s Harburg Group, represents the first time a non‑Saudi individual or company has held 100 % ownership of a club in the kingdom’s premier football competition.
Harburg’s entry into Saudi football comes amid an ambitious privatization drive by Saudi authorities aimed at attracting international investment and elevating the league’s global profile. Al‑Kholood, which finished ninth last season in its top‑flight debut, now stands as a symbol of that transformation.
Unlike many Saudi clubs backed by deep sovereign wealth funds and star names, Harburg’s strategy focuses on sustainable growth, youth development, and community engagement. “We’re building the club for the long term,” he has said, stressing financial stability and organic progress rather than marquee transfers.
Harburg’s international sports footprint also includes part ownership of Spanish side Cádiz CF, giving him experience in football markets beyond the Middle East. His leadership at Al‑Kholood is seen by many as part of a broader effort to reshape the region’s sporting landscape and inspire more global participation in Saudi football.
As the Pro League continues to attract international stars and investment, Harburg’s pioneering role signals a new era, one where foreign leadership and innovative club models contribute to Saudi football’s evolution on the world stage.
