The Government of Japan has announced a generous contribution of approximately USD 666,000 (around RWF 920 million) to the United Nations -World Food Programme to provide life-saving food assistance for refugees and returnees in Rwanda. This support is part of Japan’s ongoing commitment to promoting HumanSecurity and ensuring that vulnerable populations have access to essential resources.
Through this funding, WFP Rwanda will be able to scale up its operations, providing nutritious meals to thousands of individuals living in refugee camps and communities hosting returnees. The assistance will help alleviate hunger, support basic nutrition, and strengthen the resilience of families affected by displacement.
Japan’s contribution reflects a strong bilateral partnership with Rwanda, emphasizing solidarity in tackling humanitarian challenges. Officials highlighted that this initiative is not only a response to immediate food needs but also a step toward ensuring dignity, safety, and long-term stability for those displaced by conflict or crises.
“Dufatanye twubake ejo heza!” which means “Together, we can build a better tomorrow,” stated the Japanese government in a message expressing hope for continued collaboration with Rwanda and humanitarian agencies.
WFP Rwanda welcomed the contribution, noting that such support is crucial to sustaining food security programs amid increasing demand and global challenges. By partnering with international donors like Japan, Rwanda continues to strengthen its capacity to respond effectively to humanitarian needs while promoting social cohesion and resilience in affected communities.
