Kigali, 13 February 2026, A delegation from Kenya’s Municipality of Mariakani, led by Hon. Jane Kamto, paid a courtesy visit to the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) on Friday to gain insights into Rwanda’s environmental management framework and sustainable development strategies.
The delegation met with REMA’s Deputy Director General, Faustin Munyazikwiye, for discussions on strengthening institutional cooperation and sharing best practices in environmental governance.
The visit is part of broader efforts to enhance policy implementation and improve environmental management systems through structured knowledge exchange.

During the discussions, officials examined Rwanda’s approach to urban environmental management and community mobilization. In particular, attention was given to the coordination of national clean-up campaigns, strategies to reduce plastic pollution, and the practical implementation of the Waste Management Policy.
Participants also explored mechanisms that promote behavioral change and encourage public participation in environmental protection initiatives.
According to REMA, the talks addressed compliance with Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) standards. Emphasis was placed on regulatory enforcement, monitoring frameworks, and inter-agency coordination to ensure that development projects align with sustainability principles. Officials highlighted the role of environmental oversight in supporting responsible investment and safeguarding natural resources.
Meanwhile, both delegations discussed shared challenges related to rapid urbanization, waste generation, and environmental degradation. In this regard, the visit reflects growing recognition of Rwanda’s structured environmental governance model, particularly its focus on accountability, institutional coordination, and long-term sustainability planning.
The engagement highlighted the importance of collaboration and continued dialogue in environmental management. Observations from the visit provided practical insights into urban environmental practices, clean-up initiatives, and policy enforcement mechanisms.
