East Africa’s healthcare landscape gains fresh momentum as Nairobi hospital successfully performs its first robotic-assisted gallbladder surgery using advanced technology.

NAIROBI, Kenya: East Africa’s healthcare sector has recently reached an exciting new milestone after Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, successfully performed the region’s first robotic-assisted gallbladder removal surgery.

The breakthrough represents a significant step forward in advanced surgical care, demonstrating how cutting-edge technology can support medical teams in delivering precise, controlled, and minimally invasive procedures.

The procedure, medically known as robotic-assisted laparoscopic cholecystectomy, combines the expertise of highly trained surgeons with advanced robotic technology to enhance visualization, precision and control during surgery.

Moreover, the technology provides surgeons with a three-dimensional view of the surgical field, greater flexibility of movement and improved access to areas that can be difficult to visualize through conventional techniques.

“Robotic-assisted surgery builds on the benefits of conventional keyhole surgery by providing surgeons with a three-dimensional view of the surgical field, greater flexibility of movement, and improved access to areas that can be difficult to visualize using traditional techniques,” said Dr Abdulkarim Abdalla, Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Hospital.

Crucially, the robotic system does not operate independently. Instead, the surgeon remains in the operating theatre and maintains full control of the camera and surgical instruments through a specialized console.

At the same time, the robotic instruments offer a greater range of movement and closely mimic the motions of the human hand, supporting greater precision and control during delicate procedures.

Beyond surgical precision, the technology can also support surgeons during lengthy procedures by allowing them to work from a specialized console while seated. Enhanced visualization and instrument flexibility can further assist with complex tasks such as stitching in confined spaces.

For patients, importantly, robotic-assisted procedures offer the established benefits of minimally invasive surgery, including smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery compared with traditional open surgery.

Therefore, Aga Khan University Hospital CEO Rashid Khalani said the achievement reflects the institution’s continued commitment to healthcare innovation in Kenya and the wider region.
