Polish authorities have charged six individuals, four Belarusians and two Polish citizens, with attempting to smuggle sanctioned high-tech equipment to Russia, as reported by Reuters, in what prosecutors described as a serious breach of international sanctions.
Prosecutors in Warsaw said the suspects were detained on February 18 and accused of attempting to transport strategically significant devices through Belarus to Russia. The equipment was reportedly designed to automate the production of integrated circuits, which are widely used in advanced military systems, including combat drones and other defense technologies.
According to officials, the machinery falls under sanctions imposed by Western countries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Poland, a strong supporter of Ukraine, has repeatedly warned of efforts by Russia and Belarus to destabilize nations backing Kyiv.
“Violation of the provisions of the sanctions act is classified as a crime, punishable by imprisonment for a period of no less than three years,” prosecutors said in an official statement.
Three of the suspects have been placed in pretrial detention for three months. The remaining three were released under police supervision, required to post bail, and banned from leaving the country pending further investigation.
Prosecutors also said earlier actions by officers from Poland’s National Revenue Administration helped thwart the smuggling of a machine, potentially disrupting supplies of military-related equipment to Russian forces operating in eastern Ukraine.
The case highlights Warsaw’s intensified enforcement of sanctions aimed at restricting Russia’s access to critical technologies.
