Pope Leo XIV resumes public duties five days after lung cancer surgery

Pope Leo XIV addressed a crowd gathered in St Peter’s Square in his first public appearance since undergoing surgery for lung cancer five days ago.

He appeared on Sunday, October 18, 2026, smiling from a window of the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican and speaking in a strong, clear voice.

The 71-year-old leader of the Catholic Church underwent surgery on Tuesday, during which doctors removed the lower part of his right lung. His health condition had prompted questions about whether his illness could affect his leadership, which began 17 months ago.

On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV appeared at the palace window without assistance and delivered his customary midday address to the faithful.

He thanked people around the world who had prayed for his recovery, saying he would gradually resume all his duties as head of the Catholic Church, which has 1.4 billion members.

“After overcoming this difficult period, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” he said.

The Pope also urged pilgrims gathered to hear him to free themselves from selfish desires and serve God with unwavering commitment.
