Pope Leo XIV revives ancient Good Friday tradition at the Colosseum

On Good Friday, Pope Leo XIV, aged 70, revived an ancient tradition by leading around 30,000 people in the Way of the Cross prayer, covering all 14 stations at the historic Colosseum in Rome, while personally carrying the cross

This practice had not been performed for over 30 years. The Pope carried the cross himself for nearly two hours—a physically demanding act last undertaken by Pope John Paul II between 1980 and 1994.

The Colosseum has historically been a special site for this event since 1756, commemorating Christ and early Christians who were martyred for their faith.

This year’s prayers focused on current global challenges such as war, poverty, and the loss of human values.

The ceremony also included special reflections inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi, marking 800 years since his death in 1226.

Pope Leo XIV explained that carrying the cross was a voluntary act symbolizing solidarity with a suffering world. He called on people of all faiths to unite in promoting peace and to stand with those who are in pain.
