Rwanda has marked a breakthrough in its growing space and satellite communications sector after the Rwanda Teleport, operated by the Rwanda Space Agency (RSA), was awarded Tier 3 Full Certification by the World Teleport Association (WTA).
This recognition makes the facility the first fully certified teleport in Sub-Saharan Africa, and also the first ever space agency-operated teleport in the world to achieve WTA certification under its globally recognized Teleport Certification Program.
The announcement, made jointly from New York and Kigali, highlights a milestone moment for Rwanda’s expanding space ambitions and its increasing role in global satellite infrastructure development.
According to WTA, Rwanda’s certification is the 75th issued since the program was launched in 2015 at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC). Several other teleport operators worldwide are currently undergoing the evaluation process as part of the program’s quality assurance framework.
To obtain Full Certification, WTA deploys independent auditors to physically inspect teleport facilities, verify operational data, and assess technical performance standards. Each facility is then graded on a scale from Tier 1 to Tier 4, with Tier 4 representing the highest level of operational excellence. The certification remains valid for three years and serves as an internationally recognized benchmark for quality and reliability in satellite communications infrastructure.
Rwanda now joins a select group of globally certified teleport operators, including well-established organizations such as Eutelsat, Singtel, Telstra, Azercosmos, and others that have met WTA’s rigorous technical and operational standards.
Rwanda Space Agency CEO, Gaspard Twagirayezu, described the certification as a strong reflection of Rwanda’s long-term vision to build a competitive and future-oriented space ecosystem. He noted that the achievement reinforces international confidence in Rwanda’s technical capacity and strengthens the country’s position in advancing regional satellite communications and digital connectivity services.
“This achievement reflects Rwanda’s long-term vision to develop a competitive and future-oriented space sector. The certification of our Teleport reinforces confidence in Rwanda’s technical capabilities and highlights the country’s role in advancing regional space infrastructure and satellite communications services.“ He stated.
WTA Executive Director Randall Barney also praised the development, calling it a landmark achievement for both Rwanda and the broader African space industry. He emphasized that the certification highlights the increasing level of technical sophistication and operational maturity emerging across Africa’s satellite communications sector.
He further noted that Rwanda’s Teleport stands out not only as the only fully certified facility in Sub-Saharan Africa, but also as the first space agency-operated teleport globally to reach this level of recognition under the WTA framework.
The WTA Teleport Certification Program is designed to provide transparent, independently verified standards that help operators demonstrate service quality while enabling customers to choose providers based on performance, reliability, and value.
The Rwanda Space Agency, established in 2020, continues to play a central role in coordinating and regulating national space activities. It is also actively working to expand Rwanda’s ground segment infrastructure, including Ground Station as a Service (GSaaS), with the goal of positioning the country as a regional hub for satellite communications and space-enabled innovation.
This latest certification is expected to further strengthen Rwanda’s credibility in the global space industry and accelerate its ambition to become a leading player in Africa’s emerging space economy.
