U.S. President Donald Trump is set to deliver another economic-focused speech in Rome, Georgia, as he seeks to persuade voters that he and the Republican Party have a plan to address high living costs ahead of the November midterm elections.

As reported by Reuters, Trump won re-election in 2024 in part because of promises to reduce inflation, but public opinion polls suggest many Americans remain unconvinced that high prices are easing. According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, Trump’s approval on handling the economy is 34%, while 57% of respondents disapprove.

Focus on Affordability and Economic Messaging

Trump’s Georgia speech will take place at the Coosa Steel Corporation and is expected to highlight plans “to make life affordable for working people,” according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The address will promote tax cuts that took effect last month, removal of taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security payments, and efforts to reduce mortgage and housing costs, as well as drug prices through deals with health insurance companies.

Republican strategists warn that mixed messaging could create a credibility gap. An analysis of Trump’s five economic speeches since December showed repeated claims that inflation is “beaten” or “falling,” which contrasts with the lived experience of voters, particularly in areas like food and housing costs. The overall U.S. inflation rate in January was 2.4%, down from 2.7% in December, but food prices rose nearly 3% year-on-year, and housing costs continue to climb.

Political Stakes and Midterm Implications

Trump’s speech is in a deeply conservative district previously represented by Marjorie Taylor Greene, who resigned in January after a falling-out with the president. A special election to fill her seat is scheduled for March 10, with Trump endorsing a local prosecutor in a crowded field of 15 Republicans. This race is seen as a critical test of Trump’s influence over his Make America Great Again movement.

Republicans hold a narrow majority in the U.S. House, and voter concerns over high prices threaten to tip the balance of power. Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats to regain control, though that remains a more difficult task given the number of seats they are defending.

Trump’s upcoming address underscores the dual challenge facing Republicans: convincing voters that economic policies are effective while consolidating party unity ahead of a crucial midterm cycle.
