The UEFA Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Benfica on 17 February 2026 descended into controversy after Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior reported alleged racist abuse from Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni, temporarily halting the match for ten minutes, as reported by BBC News.

Vinicius condemned the abuse on Instagram, saying, “Racists are above all, cowards.” Real Madrid defended their player, with defender Trent Alexander-Arnold calling the alleged abuse “a disgrace to football.” The Brazilian Football Confederation expressed full solidarity, praising Vinicius’ courage in activating UEFA’s anti-racism protocol.

Benfica initially released a brief 21-word statement on X denying the allegations and calling Prestianni a target of a “defamation campaign.” The club later expanded the statement, affirming its commitment to equality and inclusion while defending Prestianni and referencing the club legend Eusébio as proof of Benfica’s anti-racist history.

Manager Jose Mourinho faced criticism for suggesting that Vinicius’ goal celebration and the club’s history mitigated the alleged abuse. Former players and pundits, including Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards, described Mourinho’s remarks as “outrageous” and “pathetic,” warning that such comments risk downplaying the seriousness of racism.

Former Benfica and Brazil defender Luisao expressed shame over the club’s defense, stating, “It was a racist act, yes, and I’m ashamed of it.” Anti-racism organization Kick It Out also criticized Benfica’s response, noting that focusing on celebrations instead of the abuse sends “the wrong message to others around the world.”

UEFA has appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate the allegations. If found guilty, Prestianni could face a minimum 10-match ban under existing regulations.

The incident has sparked wide debate about accountability, leadership, and racism in football, with both clubs’ reputations under intense scrutiny ahead of the return leg.
