Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded United Nations medals in recognition of their exemplary service, discipline, and commitment to advancing peace in one of the region’s most complex operational environments.
The medal ceremony, held at the UN Tomping Compound in Juba, marked a significant milestone for the Rwanbatt-1 contingent after ten months of dedicated service. The event was presided over by Major General Robert Yaw Affram, Deputy Force Commander of UNMISS, who described the medal as a powerful symbol of professionalism and sacrifice.
“The United Nations Medal you have received today represents professionalism, discipline, and steadfast dedication to peace. It reflects long days in challenging conditions and the courage to stand firm in the face of uncertainty. It is earned, never given,” he said.

A Strategic Contribution to Regional Stability
The recognition underscores Rwanda’s growing reputation as a reliable and highly professional troop-contributing country in global peacekeeping operations. Through consistent deployment of well-trained and disciplined personnel, Rwanda continues to reinforce its strategic commitment to multilateral peace and security frameworks.
Major General Affram also conveyed appreciation to the Government of Rwanda and the Rwanda Defence Force for their sustained contribution to UNMISS, highlighting the operational effectiveness and conduct of Rwandan troops on the ground.
For the Rwanbatt-1 Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Ndushabandi, the medal ceremony was both a celebration and a call to continued excellence. He praised the men and women of the battalion for their resilience, courage, and selfless service throughout the deployment.
“Today’s medal-pinning ceremony marks yet another significant milestone in our noble service to humanity,” he said, urging the troops to maintain their momentum for the remainder of their mission.

Discipline, Culture, and National Pride
The ceremony featured a colourful military parade, reflecting the contingent’s discipline and cohesion. The Rwanbatt-1 cultural troupe also performed, proudly showcasing Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage — a reminder that peacekeeping extends beyond security operations to building trust and fostering human connection.
As South Sudan continues its journey toward lasting stability, the recognition of Rwandan peacekeepers reinforces a broader message: sustainable peace depends on disciplined forces, strong international partnerships, and unwavering commitment to protecting civilians.
Through professionalism on the ground and strategic engagement within the United Nations framework, Rwanda continues to position itself as a principled and dependable contributor to global peacekeeping efforts.
