US and Iran hold first high-level talks since June amid ongoing tensions

Senior officials from the United States and Iran have held talks for the first time since June 2026, as both sides continue to explore ways to resolve their longstanding dispute.

The talks took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the same day U.S. President Donald Trump warned that he could take tougher action against Iran if the dispute remained unresolved.

The meeting brought together Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, following an agreement facilitated by Qatar as a mediator.

No new agreement or major breakthrough was announced after the meeting, although Witkoff said the talks had gone well.

“We concluded the talks with the hope that they will produce a positive outcome and potentially provide grounds for optimism,” he said.

Iran, meanwhile, renewed its demand that the United States halt what it described as “aggressive actions” and called for an end to the conflict on all sides.

The talks come after a ceasefire agreement reached in June 2026 failed to produce a lasting resolution.

The United States and Israel launched airstrikes against Iran on February 28, while Iran responded by targeting Israel, U.S. military bases in the Middle East and Gulf countries supporting Washington.

During the conflict, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s major routes for oil and gas shipments. Before the war, about 20 percent of global oil and gas supplies passed through the waterway, making its closure a major factor affecting international energy prices.

In recent days, President Trump has continued to push for Iran to reach an agreement, while also saying he could not rule out other actions if negotiations fail.

In his address to the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump said the war with Iran had prevented Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons and said he wanted the dispute to be resolved through an agreement.

“Will there be an agreement with Iran that will allow it to rebuild and become stronger than it has ever been? Or will I destroy the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, without giving it the opportunity to once again kill and destroy people and countries?” Trump said.

Following the New York talks, Trump described the meeting as “very productive” and said it lasted three hours.

Iran’s state television also confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Steve Witkoff.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the talks were conducted through Qatar, which conveyed Tehran’s demands to the U.S. side, including an end to the war and what Iran describes as acts of aggression.

Iran continues to demand an end to U.S. and Israeli military action, while the United States is seeking a new agreement aimed at resolving the dispute.
