Randy George, aged 61, was removed from office with one year remaining in his term. He had been appointed to the position in 2023, with his tenure originally expected to run until 2027. The role carries a four-year term.
According to information from Reuters, two other military officials were also dismissed, including David Hodne, who was in charge of training, and William Green, who oversaw matters related to military ethics and chaplaincy.
The U.S. Department of Defense, commonly known as the Pentagon, thanked him for his years of service but did not provide reasons for his early removal.
This development comes at a time when the United States is engaged in a conflict with Iran—an unusual moment to dismiss such a senior military leader.
The conflict began on February 28, 2026, when Iran was attacked by the United States and Israel. The strikes reportedly killed Ali Khamenei along with other top Iranian military officials.
Following these attacks, Iran retaliated by launching strikes across several Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, targeting U.S. forces stationed in those countries. Iran has also continued launching attacks against Israel.
On the U.S. side, the war is primarily being fought using naval and air forces, though ground troops have also been deployed to secure key operational bases.
