Sixteen-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams was honored at the White House on Monday after rescuing a 10-year-old boy from drowning at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California.
The rescue happened on July 25, 2026, when Williams saw Nathaniel Rai struggling in the surf and immediately rushed to help. Despite the strong waves, he reached the boy and helped bring him safely back toward shore.
The dramatic rescue was captured on video and later widely shared online, highlighting Williams’ courage and quick response during the emergency.
On Monday, Williams met President Donald Trump in the Oval Office alongside Nathaniel Rai and his family. Trump praised the teenager for his bravery and recognized him for saving the child’s life.
Williams said protecting people is part of his responsibility as a lifeguard and expressed gratitude to his fellow lifeguards who respond to emergencies every day.
