Colombian military plane crashes after takeoff, 66 dead

At least 66 soldiers have died in a crash involving a military aircraft in Colombia. The plane went down in the southern part of the country, near the border with Peru

This was confirmed by emergency services, which reported that 57 people survived and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals, while three others remain missing.

The aircraft crashed on March 23, 2026, shortly after taking off from Puerto Leguizamo Airport.

It was carrying 128 people, including 11 air force personnel, 115 soldiers, and two police officers. Of the 57 survivors, 30 sustained only minor injuries.

Videos circulating online show local residents near the crash site carrying out initial rescue efforts, helping survivors out of the wreckage.

It is suspected that the aircraft may have collided with an object during ascent, causing it to crash. As it was going down, its left wing reportedly hit a tree, leading to an explosion, according to a firefighter, Eduardo San Juan Callejas.

Authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
