Rwanda Meteorology Agency has warned of heavy rains in April

The Rwanda Meteorology Agency has announced that in April 2026, rainfall is expected to be above the usual average for this time of year, and in some areas, it may cause disasters

Rainfall between 100 mm and 320 mm is forecast across different parts of the country. This amount is slightly higher than the average rainfall typically recorded during this month.

This will help maintain good soil moisture, which will have positive effects on agricultural activities, especially since the country is in the middle of the rainy season (Itumba), when crops require sufficient rainfall.

During this month, strong winds and thunderstorms are also expected, which could lead to disasters, particularly in areas where the soil is already saturated due to continuous rainfall.

Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 20°C and 29°C, while nighttime temperatures will range between 10°C and 19°C.

Moderate to strong winds are also expected, with speeds ranging between 4 and 12 meters per second throughout the month.

The Minister in charge of Emergency Management, Albert Murasira, recently urged Rwandans to take precautions against disasters that may result from the ongoing heavy rains, reminding those living in high-risk zones to relocate.

Minister Murasira made these remarks in a message shared by the Ministry of Emergency Management on social media platforms.

He said, “At this time, we are experiencing heavy rainfall, as has also been indicated by the meteorological agency. It is therefore necessary to take measures and inform people that, due to Rwanda’s geographical nature, the rainy season is when we often face disasters. These commonly include lightning, landslides, floods, and strong winds; in some areas, we even see hailstorms.”

Minister Murasira called on residents living in high-risk zones to relocate, emphasizing that long-term measures are being implemented to ensure that no one lives in areas that put their lives in danger.
