The image, posted on his Truth Social platform over the weekend, depicted Trump dressed in a white robe and appearing to bless an individual, imagery many observers interpreted as mimicking Jesus Christ. The post quickly sparked backlash from religious leaders, political figures, and members of the public.
The controversy was further fueled by Trump’s remarks targeting Pope Leo XIV, whom he criticised as being “weak on crime” and ineffective in foreign policy. His comments intensified tensions between his administration and the Vatican, which have been strained in recent months over issues including conflict, immigration, and global diplomacy, according to Al Jazeera.
Speaking to reporters after deleting the image, Trump dismissed criticism, claiming the depiction was misunderstood and intended to resemble a humanitarian or medical figure, rather than a religious one.
