Lula said that Trump’s policies are destabilizing not only the economies of various countries but also that of the United States itself, highlighting rising fuel prices as a major concern.
He made these remarks in an interview with El País on April 16, 2026.
He said, “He is playing a very dangerous game. He believes that America’s arrogance-based on its economic, military, and technological power, can dictate global rules. However, this could put the United States at risk.”
Lula added, “When he decided to attack Iran, I don’t know if he considered that fuel prices would rise and that it is ordinary citizens who would suffer the consequences.”
Before the Iran conflict escalated, crude oil was priced at around $70 per barrel. By March, it had risen to as high as $119.
However, following the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, global oil prices began to decline.
The price of Brent crude oil dropped to $88 per barrel, down from nearly $100 on April 16, 2026.
