According to CNN, tensions had been building in recent days between Phelan and the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, due to Phelan’s alleged failure to follow directives related to reforms Trump wants in military ship construction.
A spokesperson for the Department of Defense, Sean Parnell, confirmed on Wednesday evening that Phelan left the position immediately, with no prior notice given.
The move reportedly surprised Navy personnel currently involved in operations to block Iranian ports during a temporary ceasefire in the conflict involving Iran.
Sources told CNN that Hegseth had spoken with Trump and then informed Phelan that he must either resign or be forcibly removed.
Several individuals also indicated that tensions between Phelan and Hegseth had lasted for months. Hegseth reportedly believed Phelan was moving too slowly in implementing necessary shipbuilding reforms. He was also dissatisfied that Phelan communicated directly with Trump without going through him, which he viewed as bypassing the chain of command.
Additionally, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg was said to be seeking control over key responsibilities related to naval shipbuilding and procurement, duties that traditionally fall under Phelan’s authority.
