Rwanda Meteorological Agency (Meteo Rwanda) has issued a positive and balanced weather outlook for May 2026, indicating mixed rainfall patterns across the country while remaining within normal seasonal conditions.
According to the forecast released on April 30, rainfall is expected to range between 50mm and 230mm nationwide. Overall, precipitation will remain close to the long-term average, with most areas experiencing typical seasonal conditions, especially during the first ten days of the month before a gradual shift toward slightly drier conditions later on.
Western and Northern provinces are set to receive the highest rainfall, ranging between 200mm and 230mm. Districts such as Burera, Musanze, Nyabihu, Ngororero, Karongi, Rusizi, and Nyamasheke will benefit from consistent rainfall that supports agriculture and water availability. Similar conditions are expected in parts of Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, Rutsiro, and Rubavu.
Kigali City and much of the Northern, Western, and Southern provinces are forecast to receive between 150mm and 200mm of rainfall, providing generally favourable conditions for urban and rural activities. Some eastern and southern parts of the capital may experience slightly lower but still adequate rainfall.
Moderate rainfall between 100mm and 150mm is expected in parts of the Southern Province and several eastern districts, including Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza, Rwamagana, Ngoma, and Bugesera. These conditions are considered beneficial for ongoing agricultural activities.
The Eastern Province will record lower rainfall levels, ranging between 50mm and 100mm in some areas, contributing to a diverse but manageable national rainfall distribution.
Temperatures are expected to remain comfortable and stable across the country. Maximum daytime temperatures will range between 19°C and 29°C, with warmer conditions in Kigali, the Amayaga region, Bugarama plain, and most of the Eastern Province, supporting daily economic and social activities.
Cooler and pleasant daytime temperatures are expected in highland areas such as Nyabihu, Musanze, Ngororero, Nyamagabe, Rutsiro, and Rubavu, offering balanced climatic conditions across different regions.
Night temperatures will range between 10°C and 19°C, with colder but typical conditions in mountainous areas and milder nights in Kigali and eastern districts such as Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza, and Kirehe.
Wind speeds are expected to range between 4 and 12 metres per second, contributing to good air circulation and stable weather conditions. Stronger winds will be observed in parts of the Western Province and selected eastern districts, while Kigali and central areas will experience lighter and more comfortable wind levels. Most of the country will enjoy moderate wind conditions.
Meteo Rwanda highlights that May will generally bring favourable and stable weather conditions across the country, supporting agriculture, daily activities, and water management. The slight variations in rainfall across regions are expected to maintain ecological balance and seasonal productivity, contributing positively to national weather patterns.
