SalamAir launches direct flights between Oman and Kigali

Oman-based airline SalamAir has announced new direct routes to Africa, including non-stop flights to Kigali, which will operate twice a week.

Flights between Muscat in Oman and Kigali are scheduled to begin on July 21, 2026. The service will operate every Tuesday and Thursday.

One-way tickets will start at 69.99 Omani Riyals, equivalent to more than Rwf 266,000.

In a statement released on April 30, 2026, SalamAir said the Kigali route is part of its expansion strategy in Africa and reflects its commitment to providing affordable air travel to underserved destinations.

The airline noted that the new route is expected to strengthen trade ties between Oman and East African countries by easing business travel, supporting investment opportunities, and contributing to sustainable economic growth between both sides.

SalamAir Chief Commercial Officer Steven Allen said Rwanda has become an important destination due to the rapid growth of its tourism and investment sectors in recent years.

He stated, “Tourism and investment travel to Rwanda have increased significantly over the years. Kigali is a beautiful and modern destination, widely recognized for its culture, vibrant market, unique history, and natural attractions. As part of our expansion strategy, we remain committed to connecting Oman with emerging markets through affordable, reliable, and direct flights.”

Rwanda’s tourism sector generated $685 million in revenue in 2025, up from $647 million in 2024, representing a 6% increase.

The number of visitors to Rwanda also rose by 9% to 1.49 million people, with many tourists visiting Volcanoes National Park, which is famous for mountain gorillas, alongside other national parks.

Rwanda and Oman have maintained strong diplomatic relations for many years and cooperate in trade and other sectors.

In January 2026, the two countries signed four cooperation agreements, including deals related to cargo transport services. Both nations also agreed to collaborate on the development of a dry port and logistics infrastructure.

In aviation, the two countries signed an agreement allowing Oman Air to launch direct flights connecting Kigali and Muscat starting in June 2026.

In development cooperation, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and Oman’s airport management authority signed an investment agreement concerning areas surrounding Bugesera International Airport.

In the technology sector, Rwanda’s Ministry of ICT and Innovation and its Omani counterpart signed agreements focused on hosting data centers, cloud storage services, digital infrastructure development, and the promotion of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
