Rwanda is set to host the 21st edition of the Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony on Friday, 4 September 2026, at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park in Musanze District. The annual event remains one of the world’s most celebrated conservation milestones, bringing together communities, conservation experts, and international guests in honor of newborn mountain gorillas.
The upcoming 2026 ceremony builds on the success of the 20th anniversary edition held on 5 September 2025 in Kinigi, which was marked by strong participation and global attention. During that milestone event, 40 baby gorillas were named by global leaders, artists, football legends, conservationists, and Rwandan rangers, including 18 born in 2024.
The ceremony reflected Rwanda’s steady progress in protecting one of the world’s most endangered species while celebrating the communities that live closest to these iconic animals.
The 2025 edition, held under the theme “A legacy of community-centered conservation, securing a sustainable future for all,” highlighted the deep connection between conservation and community development. It recognized the critical role played by rangers, researchers, veterinarians, and local communities in safeguarding mountain gorillas and preserving their natural habitat within the Volcanoes National Park ecosystem.
Over the past two decades, Kwita Izina has grown into a powerful global platform for conservation awareness. Since its launch in 2005, above 430 gorillas have been named, each name carrying a story of hope, protection, and shared responsibility. The ceremony has also contributed to increased international collaboration in biodiversity conservation and sustainable tourism.
As Rwanda prepares for the 2026 edition, expectations are high for another meaningful celebration that will continue to strengthen conservation efforts and community engagement.
The event is expected to highlight ongoing achievements in gorilla population protection, support for surrounding communities, and continued investment in eco-tourism initiatives.
Rooted in Rwanda’s cultural tradition of naming newborns in the presence of family and community, Kwita Izina remains a powerful reminder of the value of life and the importance of protecting nature. For mountain gorillas, each name given is not only a symbol of identity but also a commitment to their long-term survival.
Kwita Izina continues to grow in global recognition, positioning Rwanda as a leading example of successful wildlife conservation, while showcasing the beauty of Volcanoes National Park and reinforcing the shared responsibility of protecting endangered species for future generations.
