Trump made the remarks after holding a phone conversation with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission.
“I have waited a long time for the EU to complete its side of the trade agreement we reached in Turnberry, Scotland — the biggest deal ever made,” Trump said.
According to Trump, the EU had agreed to complete its obligations under the agreement, a move that would reduce tariffs on goods traded between the two sides to zero.
“I have decided to give them until our nation’s 250th anniversary celebration, otherwise their tariffs will immediately be raised higher than anyone else’s,” he added.
Trump also stated that tariffs on vehicles imported from EU member states would increase from the current 15% to 25%, accusing the bloc of failing to honor commitments made under the Turnberry trade agreement.
The U.S. president further revealed that he and von der Leyen discussed the ongoing conflict involving Iran and agreed that Iran should not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
