Agricultural Sector Boosts Rwanda’s Foreign Exchange Earnings

Kigali, Rwanda, generated USD 9,682,012 from agricultural exports between 04–08 May 2026, according to new figures released by the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB), highlighting the country’s growing strength in international agricultural trade.

During the five days, Rwanda exported a total of 9,352 metric tons of agricultural products to markets across Europe, the Middle East, the United States, and Africa.

Tea emerged as the country’s leading export commodity by revenue, earning USD 2,887,284 from the export of 1,027 metric tons. The strong performance reflects sustained global demand for Rwanda’s premium tea products, which continue to gain recognition in international markets.

Coffee, one of Rwanda’s flagship exports, generated USD 864,652 from 194 metric tons exported. Rwanda’s specialty coffee remains highly valued globally for its quality and unique flavor profile.

The report also shows continued growth in Rwanda’s non-traditional export sectors. Diversified agricultural products generated the highest overall earnings, bringing in USD 4,162,235 from 6,954 metric tons exported. Major destinations included Oman, the United States, and several African countries.

Horticultural exports maintained steady momentum during the reporting period. Vegetable exports generated USD 503,192 from 274 metric tons, with key markets including Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, France, China, and African countries.

Fruit exports earned USD 304,191 from 456 metric tons, mainly destined for the United Arab Emirates and African markets.

Meanwhile, flower exports generated USD 79,716 from 15 metric tons, with exports reaching Nigeria, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Animal products also contributed significantly to export earnings, generating USD 880,742 from 432 metric tons, largely supplied to regional African markets.

The latest figures underscore Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to diversify agricultural exports and expand access to high-value international markets. Analysts say the growing range of export destinations strengthens the country’s resilience against global market fluctuations while boosting foreign exchange revenues.

Agriculture remains one of Rwanda’s key economic pillars, supporting millions of livelihoods and contributing substantially to national income. Continued investments in irrigation, agro-processing, post-harvest handling, and export logistics are expected to further enhance the sector’s competitiveness.

The strong early-May performance also reflects increasing confidence in Rwanda’s agricultural standards and export quality as the country continues positioning itself as a reliable supplier in global markets.
