Our lead story today is the 63rd anniversary of Africa Day. On this day in 1963, 32 independent African heads of state gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to sign the charter that created the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie, this summit was a decisive rejection of colonialism and a commitment to Pan-African unity. While the OAU evolved into the African Union in 2002, May 25th remains the premier celebration of African identity and liberation.

1961 ,JFK’s Moon Shot: President John F. Kennedy stood before a joint session of the U.S. Congress and issued a bold challenge: the United States should commit itself to landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth before the decade was out. This sparked the “Space Race” in earnest.
