Idris Elba knighted by King Charles III, earns the title “Sir”

Internationally acclaimed actor Idris Elba has been awarded one of the United Kingdom’s highest honors by King Charles III, officially earning the title “Sir Idris Elba.”

The honor recognizes Elba’s outstanding contributions to the film industry, his work supporting young people, and his efforts to combat violence affecting youth.

Elba is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prominent actors, known for his acclaimed performances in the TV series Luther and The Wire, as well as the film Beasts of No Nation.

Born in London in 1972, Elba has roots in both West Africa—his father was from Sierra Leone and his mother from Ghana.

Beyond acting, Elba is also a musician and DJ, performing under the name DJ Big Driis. In 2016, he received the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire). On June 2, 2026, he was elevated to a knighthood, allowing him to use the title “Sir.”

The title of “Sir” is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and made significant contributions to society or their profession over many years. The honor is bestowed by the British monarch and historically was often granted to distinguished military figures. It cannot be purchased.

Receiving a knighthood places Sir Idris Elba among a distinguished group of honored British public figures and marks another major milestone in a career spanning more than three decades at the highest level of global entertainment.
