Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in North Korea on Monday, June 8, 2026, for a rare two-day state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), where North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and First Lady Ri Sol Ju in Pyongyang warmly and formally welcomed him.

According to Chinese state media and international reports, Xi’s arrival was marked by a highly organized and ceremonial reception at the airport, where he was greeted with handshakes, floral bouquets presented by children, and official military honors. The moment signaled the beginning of his first visit to North Korea in seven years, reflecting renewed high-level diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

A grand welcome ceremony was later held at Kim Il Sung Square, one of Pyongyang’s most symbolic public spaces. There, both leaders stood together on the review platform during a 21-gun salute, as the Korean People’s Army honor guard performed a formal march-past. Large crowds gathered in coordinated displays, waving flags, flowers, and balloons in a peaceful and celebratory atmosphere. Officials reported chants expressing goodwill toward Xi, highlighting the respectful tone of the event, according to Xinhua

The visit underscores the long-standing friendship between China and North Korea, which has been built over decades of diplomatic relations, including the historic 1961 Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance. China continues to play a key role as North Korea’s most important economic partner and a consistent supporter of regional dialogue and stability.

The timing of the visit is viewed as significant in regional diplomacy. It comes after increased international engagement by Chinese leadership, including recent meetings with major global figures such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Beijing.

Analysts say these diplomatic activities reflect China’s growing role in encouraging dialogue and stability in a rapidly changing global environment.

North Korea has also recently increased its focus on defense and technological development. State media reported that leader Kim Jong Un visited key industrial and defense facilities, emphasizing national strength and modernization efforts. Despite differing perspectives in the international community, such developments continue to be part of broader discussions on regional security and balance.

Chinese state media has described Xi’s visit as an opportunity to strengthen traditional friendship further and “draw a new blueprint” for future cooperation between the two countries. The focus, according to officials, remains on dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful development.

Xi’s two-day visit is expected to include further high-level meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation, improving communication channels, and supporting long-term regional stability. This visit reflects continued diplomatic engagement and a shared interest in maintaining constructive relations between Beijing and Pyongyang.
