U.S.-Iran peace talks in Switzerland postponed

Peace talks between the United States and Iran that were scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday, June 19, 2026, have been postponed.

The decision was announced by Switzerland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday morning, coming just hours after the White House confirmed that U.S. Vice President JD Vance would no longer participate in the meeting.

The talks were due to be held at the Bürgenstock mountain resort and were expected to focus on the implementation of a recently signed agreement aimed at ending hostilities between the two countries.

According to U.S. officials, Vice President Vance’s trip had initially been planned because a formal signing ceremony for the agreement was expected to take place on Friday. However, President Donald Trump signed the agreement earlier than anticipated on June 17, 2026, while attending the G7 summit in France.

Washington said Swiss authorities informed them that there was no longer any need for the vice president to travel to Switzerland since the agreement had already been signed by the leaders of the two nations.

Despite the signing of the accord, both sides had planned to use Friday’s meeting to discuss practical steps for putting the agreement into effect and ensuring that the ceasefire arrangements were properly implemented.

However, the White House said several issues had yet to be resolved, particularly on the Iranian side. It did not specify which aspects remained outstanding but indicated that further consultations would be required before the implementation process could proceed.

The postponement raises fresh questions about the pace at which the agreement can be put into practice, even as both Washington and Tehran have publicly expressed support for efforts to bring an end to the conflict.

Neither the United States nor Iran immediately announced a new date for the talks, while Swiss authorities said they remain ready to facilitate future discussions aimed at maintaining the momentum of the peace process.
