On the night of Sunday, June 21, 2026, Iran faced Belgium in a Group G match of the FIFA World Cup in the United States.
The game came amid growing tensions between Iran and the United States. Iran has accused Washington of mistreating the team, which is based in Mexico after some members were denied visas to enter the U.S. The squad was required to travel to match venues on game days and return within 27 minutes after matches.
Following the 0-0 draw, the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) said the ideals of the Iranian people remain unchanged and are rooted in the country’s long history.
“From the Persian civilization thousands of years ago to the modern and developed Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and strong,” the federation said.
Before leaving Los Angeles, where they had played, the team left a handwritten note in the dressing room calling for respect among nations participating in the tournament.
The message read:
“We came to Los Angeles with honor, competed with mutual respect, and leave with resilience. Thank you, Los Angeles, for the hospitality you showed us.”
“Thank you also to every Iranian fan who gave their heart, voice and spirit over the last 180 minutes. May peace, dignity and friendship prevail among all nations.”
Written in blue ink, the message also contained the word “Minab” and the number 168, referring to the number of children killed in an attack on the Shajare Tayyiba Girls School, which Iran says involved the United States and Israel.
Iran recently indicated that it is preparing a complaint against FIFA, alleging that world football’s governing body has not treated the team in the same manner as other national sides.
