Morocco’s automotive sector has received a fresh boost following the launch of a new German investment by LEONI Cable Solutions, strengthening the country’s position as a leading manufacturing hub in Africa.
The company has broken ground on a new production facility in the Kenitra Free Trade Zone, marking its first industrial plant on the African continent. The investment, estimated at around €60 million (approximately 68 million), is aimed at producing advanced automotive cables for modern vehicles, including systems for electric and autonomous driving, according to BI Africa.
The new facility will manufacture both single-core and multi-core cables, as well as data transmission systems that support connected and intelligent vehicle platforms. It is expected to play a key role in supplying global automotive manufacturers as the industry shifts toward more digital, automated, and energy-efficient mobility solutions.
The project will be developed on a 48,000-square-metre site, featuring 18,000 square metres dedicated to production and office facilities, with a further 9,000 square metres set aside for future expansion. Production is expected to commence in 2027.
At full capacity, the plant is expected to employ around 200 workers, starting with an initial workforce of about 90 employees. The company also plans to establish a testing and quality control laboratory to ensure compliance with international automotive standards.
Morocco continues to attract major global investors in the automotive sector, supported by industrial policies, export-oriented reforms, and the development of specialized free trade zones. The country has positioned itself as a competitive destination for automotive manufacturing, serving both European and international markets.
LEONI also plans to introduce training and knowledge-transfer programs to support local skills development in advanced manufacturing and quality management. In addition, the facility will incorporate sustainability features, including energy-efficient systems and the use of recyclable materials.
This investment adds to Morocco’s growing reputation as a regional automotive powerhouse and highlights the growing role of German companies in shaping the country’s industrial development.
